A Parenting Victory!

School started this week and what a difference a year makes.

Last year, we were the new family and Zander and Daisy were the new kids. We had zero pre-existing knowledge of their assigned teachers, how the school worked or where their classrooms were on that first day.

Things sure have changed.

Both children were pleased with their teacher assignments and knew exactly where their respective classrooms were located.

Naturally, there was trepidation leading up to the first day. We spent plenty of time talking and addressing their concerns.

I’m a firm believer in all of life’s experiences serving as preparation for the moment we’re in right now.

We talked about this and cited numerous examples from their lives so far and while they appeared to take it in, I wasn’t sure they fully grasped the concept.

Until later.

As the conversation continued, each child recounted specific incidents from the previous school year that helped inform their readiness for this coming year.

They listened to what we discussed!

They internalized it and were able to scan their memory bank for examples!

And they were able to apply those past experiences to help build confidence heading into their first day!

I admit this was a very proud parenting moment.

And while I’m not naive enough to think everything will be hunky-dory for the rest of the school year, for now, I’m holding on to this moment.

Be well.
