Finding Your Flow

I remember the first time I entered a local barre class over 7 years ago. It was my first exercise class since high school (so it had been a few years) and I was so nervous. I had just had 2 children in the past 4 years and I wasn’t feeling great about my ability to keep up with whatever was about to come at me.

Still, I decided to give this class a try and see what happened. I had come to the realization that I needed to do something for myself again to feel better and healthier and I was intrigued by this type of class.

I was worried I’d be judged by others in the class. The voices in my head said, “I'm not as flexible as them” and  “I can’t hold that lunge as long as they can”. Those things were both definitely true, but I found that if I just focused on what I was doing, I didn’t even notice if anyone was watching me. I just retreated into my own world, focused on improving myself and my performance and not bothering with the comparisons.

The first class was really hard - but I made it through (mostly) - and I felt amazing (and of course sore). So I kept going - and each time it got easier and felt more natural. And soon it was a routine.

Over the years I’ve mixed up my routine with other classes - cycling, pilates, yoga - and some work for me and some I can definitely say don’t. That’s ok. Just like with food, not every exercise works for everyone.

It’s just as important to go out and experiment with different types of movement to see what works for you (and to challenge your brain). I encourage you to go out and try something new this week! Stacey started boxing the past 6 months and while the start was really awkward, she’s loving it and it’s a regular part of her exercise routine.

See how it feels and if that might be a nice addition to your routine.

Take care,
Sarah (+Stacey)
